Scuba diving along the island is especially popular because the water is shallow enough that there is no real danger but contains gorgeous spectacles of nature, such as fish, turtles, and coral reefs. You can become licensed to scuba dive in Malaysia itself, but many people take lessons in Thailand and cross the border to visit the beach when they are ready to practice their skills. The island is far more quiet and peaceful than its busy neighbor, so most divers prefer to practice there.

There are a wide range of dive sites on the island itself, which is located only 20 kilometers off the coast of Malaysia. Most scuba divers agree that Tokong Laut (Malaysian for Temple of the Sea), is the best site for a dive. There are nine other sites located elsewhere on the island. Most of the sites are fairly shallow, which make them ideal for novice scuba divers looking to get some practice.

If scuba diving scares you, don’t despair. The water is shallow enough that you can safely rent a snorkel and see much of the gorgeous wildlife. The northern end of Coral Bay is perfect for snorkeling. Many turtles and species of fish live in the waters underneath this bay. Fortunately, there are no dangerous animals such as sharks in Coral Bay.

If you are into wrecks, there are two located in the waters underneath the island. The Vietnamese Wreck is located in such a way that divers can easily get into the wreck itself. More recently, a cargo ship called the Sugar went down in these waters in 2000. The best time to go scuba diving on the island is between April and October. This is because during the winter months, it is monsoon season in Asia. Poor weather, including high winds and torrential rain, creates unsafe diving conditions.

If these activities aren’t enough to entice you, the island is considered a tropical paradise. The weather is close to perfect, and both the sand and ocean are unusually clean.

One such resort, the Tuna Bay, caters to families. Several families at a time can stay at this shack, and the staff and other guests tend to be outgoing and friendly.

Finally, if the rest of the island is not enough for you, visit the Pasir Panjang (in English, “The Long Beach”). This beach is a popular picnicking spot; families and couples can sit out on the sand and eat.

Perhentian Island, Malaysia may not be your first choice for a honeymoon spot, but if you are seeking romance with your newly married partner, you will not find a quieter, more appropriate place.

The South of the country is a great resort district, with beaches, nightlife, and some great restaurants. Malaga and Marbella are two destinations worth visiting, as is Mijas, a picturesque coastal town in the South.

The resorts were a lot of fun, but I had the best time of all during the few days that I spent in Madrid. This was the most traditional of the cities I visited, and I mean that in the best of ways.

Between great restaurants, shopping, and all kinds of exciting nightlife, there was never a shortage of stuff to do when it came to Madrid.

There’s so much more that I loved about the country, and I’ll do my best to write another article as time permits. Visit Spain if you can, you won’t regret it.
